As a group we would not necessarily recommend this book for teachers or future teachers. We feel that while the text does give very detailed feelings of a transgendered woman, the material within the book would be of little or no relevant use in the classroom. The text did not give any teaching techniques, and it also did not contain any general advice regarding sensitively dealing with the emotional struggles of a homosexual or transgendered individuals. Additionally, we do not feel that this book contains any information that would benefit administrators or policy-makers in their executive decisions about education.
However, the book does paint a very vivid picture of this woman’s life and feelings, and the book might be helpful for struggling parents of a child who is either homosexual or feels that they are in need of changing themselves. The author’s perspective and detailed research might help bridge the gap of understanding between parents and their children. As the author herself states, on page 5: "You may be a student in college or high school trying to understand diverse classmates. You may be taking a deep breath before coming out yourself... You may be studying gender theory and wondering where science fits in... You may belong to a discussion group in your place of worship trying to understand how to be inclusive..." The author makes no direct mention to usefulness by classroom teachers or others in educational leadership, and sadly we must agree that there seems to be no significant usefulness for our purposes.
