Garter snakes awakening form hiberation, leave their caves to mate in the warm sunshine. Due to the fact that males and females have the same perfume glands that the females use to attract the males, there is often same sex relations happening in these mating balls. Contrary to contemporary biologists interpretations of this action as a method to gain advantage in mating, the author suggests that this is a preferrable passtime to attacking one another while awaiting the females to awake from hibernation. (Roughgarden, 2004,pg. 97)

The blue gilled sunfish species consists of 3 genders; a paternal male, a female and a cuckolder male that mimics the female. The actions of this mimcry are interpreted by biologists as a buffer to calm potentially interactions between the aggressive male and the coy female during spawning. (Roughgarden, 2004, pg. 84)
